There are a number of private hospitals that provide dedicated mental health services, including inpatient, day-patient and community outreach services. These hospitals service people who are self-funding their care or have private health insurance, DVA (Department of Veterans Affairs) and other types of insurance (e.g. WorkCover).
To access a private mental health hospital, your GP must refer you to a psychiatrist who has admitting privileges to a private hospital. The psychiatrist will then assess you and decide whether to make a referral to the hospital.
